10 Years of the Brainbox Initiative Conference

Our History

Our journey began in 2017 with a clear mission: to provide a high-profile stage for early-career neuroscientists to showcase their latest research. Unlike traditional conferences that often prioritise senior voices, we wanted to put the spotlight on the newcomers shaping the future of the field.

From our inaugural event, we sought to provide tangible support through our cornerstone honours:

  • The Young Investigator Award: Established to identify and reward the most innovative, novel research conducted by academics at the start of their journey.

  • The Research Challenge Award: Designed to provide researchers with the vital equipment and technical support needed to bring complex projects to life.

We are proud to have granted these awards, sometimes to multiple recipients, at every conference since. Thank you to our Scientific Committee for doing the hard task of selecting the winners from all of the fantastic applications we receive!

We were thrilled by the reception of our very first conference; seeing so many dedicated researchers come together confirmed that we were onto something special. What started as a successful debut has evolved into the Brainbox Initiative’s most essential annual event, with our international guest list growing larger and more diverse every year.

The global pandemic demanded an alternative approach to scientific exchange, leading us to transition to a digital-first platform. While born of necessity, this sparked a permanent evolution of the conference: having seen how digital tools democratised access for those unable to travel, we have continued to offer a hybrid model every year since.

In 2021, Professor John Rothwell recognised a lack of formal accolades for those moving past their initial studies but still actively pushing the boundaries of non-invasive brain stimulation.

It was his vision that led to the launch of the John Rothwell Award, specifically celebrating the significant contributions and body of work of mid-career researchers.

The Brainbox Initiative Conference would not be the powerhouse it is today without the guidance of the pioneers who believed in our mission from day one.

Our deepest gratitude goes to the mentors and visionaries who have championed this community, with special thanks to our Scientific Committee!

As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, we remain committed to supporting the rising voices in the neuroscience world, breaking down barriers, and witnessing the breakthroughs of the next decade.
